The Pacific Northwest is an ever changing landscape, the Cascade Volcanoes and it’s devastating effects have shaped the territory as we know it today- and will continue to dominate and shape the region as well as the population exceeding 10 million people. We live with this constant threat, existing uncertainly in uncharted times. 7 eruptions have occurred in the last 200 years, most notably Mt. St Helens in 1980. Mt Rainer is North America’s only Decades Volcano (16 International Volcanoes studied due to large destructive activity and close proximity to large populations). Mt Hood towers above Portland and has been labeled the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt in the next 30 years. Building upon this idea, we wanted to depict these volcanoes as animate, movable structures not static and immovable as they appear. The nature of change, creation and destruction will always leave the Pacific Northwest as uncharted territory.
